Optimizing Maternity Leave: A Roadmap to Post-Pregnancy Recovery
The #1 complication that arises from pregnancy is recovery. Maternity leave alone does not guarantee that an employee will return to work performing at the same level as prior to maternity leave as there haven’t been any guidelines in the United States that help a women mange her post-baby recovery; that is until now. Provide your employees with the vital information they need to manage their post-baby nutritional diet, personal care and activities. This knowledge will not only increase the likelihood of a strong, healthy and balanced recovery, but also ensure the return of happier and more productive employees.
There is no better time for a woman to recover from pregnancy than when she is on maternity leave as she will experience the optimum “Healing Window of Opportunity” within the first eight-weeks after childbirth as her body transitions back to a non-pregnant state. The sooner maternity recovery is managed, the quicker and more sound the recovery.
Expectation of an Employee returning from Maternity Leave
- Rather than having new mothers return to the office with their minds on baby, employees return as productive and functioning at the same level as when they left.
An extended, paid Maternity Leave does not guarantee:
- That an employee will return;
- That an employee will be as productive as she had been previously;
- That an employee will not experience postpartum emotions that may have an adverse effect on job performance.
Why is Maternity Leave alone NOT sufficient?
- Due to cultural norms, women in the United States typically delay their maternity recovery management until after their 6-week medical exam, or Phase I.
- The critical Phase 1 – from 0 to 6 weeks’ post-birth – is the “Healing Window of Opportunity” and is not well understood. Neither is Phase II – 6 weeks and beyond.
- Currently, maternity-specific, recovery guidelines and proven recovery programs that focus on after birth diet and personal care exist in a number of countries around the world, but not the United States and most other western countries.

Eastern maternity recovery healthcare practices in the Far East are in a global lead position. Not only does Asia have the raw materials, it also has a deep heritage and expansive postnatal knowledge as part of the culture. In Malaysia, for example, after birth recovery services and treatments are part of its maternal healthcare policy. Non-Asian countries no longer underestimate the effectiveness of traditional maternity traditions and the benefits are presently being more clearly understood through extensive research via prestigious institutes such as the World Health Organization (WTO). Women in the U.S., and other countries, are increasingly searching for more natural childbirth recovery methods as the ability to heal faster after pregnancy is desired, and needed, in a fast-paced economy like the United States.
Here in the United States, a major topic of board room discussion is the investment made by corporations in the form of paid, extended maternity and paternity leave for their employees. However, new mothers do not realize that they are impeding their own recovery, so the current line of thinking is simply not enough. The U.S. does not have the body of postnatal knowledge to draw upon to guide women as they recover from childbirth. Now, U.S. companies are looking beyond their borders to the East to fill this void with a “new” body of centuries-old knowledge.
The Mommy Plan book
Through The Mommy Plan book and e-book, The Mommy Plan Recipe Book: Healing Meals: Simple Recipes for New Moms, the most effective, world-tested, traditional methods from Malaysia accelerate post-pregnancy recovery by tapping into the natural healing capabilities of the body. The Mommy Plan is an important, information-filled book, focused on helping Western women and their families adapt traditional postpartum practices into their own postpartum care. It is also an easily-digestible read. Lynn’s book provides the reader with a plan to help prepare a new mother and her family for optimum postpartum recovery. Although no exact cause has been found as a link to all perinatal mood disorders, factors such as hormone imbalances, lack of sleep, previous mental health issues, and inadequate social support are known to predispose some women. Lynn’s book is not meant to make the case that The Mommy Plan will either fully protect against or eradicate a postpartum mood disorder. However, by addressing some of the factors that may play a role in postpartum mood disorders, Lynn offers age-old guidance on how to best set a new mother and her family up for peak postpartum healing, with the hope that this will lessen the likelihood of serious physical or emotional issues occurring.
