This body of knowledge regarding how the rest of the world views post-pregnancy wellness may be new to women in the United States. However, three billion people on the planet follow a well-structured set of post-pregnancy recovery guidelines in stark contrast to those that are typical in America.
Extended paid maternity leave alone is not enough IF a mother’s recovery is not managed. The #1 complication from pregnancy is recovery. Over 1,000,0000 women, or 1 in 5 new mothers, or 20%, experience Postpartum Mood & Anxiety Disorders (PMAD) resulting in a $20 billion cost to the U.S. economy. Why Are There No Postpartum Recovery Guidelines?
Simply, because healing and recuperation of a new mother takes place at home and is not the responsibility of the doctor. The conventional practice that has been followed is the medical responsibility of an OBGYN normally ends with a successful birth of a baby and then a physical check at six-weeks postpartum. A doctor is not response for the healing and recuperation of a mother so there was no interest nor focus on this final part of pregnancy.
Maternity leave alone does not guarantee a new Mother will return to work performing at the same level as prior to going on leave. Many organizations have made the significant decision to honor new families by investing in an extended, paid maternity leave policy. However, leave is only part of this complicated equation; another part is guidelines specific to recovery after pregnancy and childbirth.
New mothers require this vital information, presented in a concise step-by-step manner, to manage their post-baby nutritional diet, personal care and activities. This knowledge will not only increase the likelihood of a strong, healthy and balanced recovery, but also ensure the return of happier and more productive employees as they are able to have a faster, strong recovery allowing for quality-bonding time with their newborn.

Expectation of an Employer returning from Maternity Leave
- A well-rested, healed productive employee returning to positively contribute to the organization functioning physically and mentally as prior to going on maternity leave.
- Most new mothers return not physically healed or hormonally re-balanced which is directly related to maternal mental instability as their minds are on their baby leading to reduction in productivity and an increase in illness and absenteeism.
Extended, paid Maternity Leave does not guarantee:
- That an employee will return.
- That an employee will be as productive as she had been previously.
- That an employee will return and quit the same year.
- That an employee will not experience postpartum emotions that may have an adverse effect on job performance.
Why is Maternity Leave alone NOT sufficient?
- Due to cultural norms, women in the United States typically delay their recovery until after Phase I or, the 6-week medical exam.
- The critical Phase 1: 0 to 6 weeks post-birth – is the “Healing Window of Opportunity” that is not well understood; neither is Phase II – 6 weeks and beyond.
- Currently, maternity-specific, recovery guidelines and proven recovery programs that focus on after birth diet and personal care exist in many countries around the world, but not the United States and most other western countries.
The “Healing Window of Opportunity”
The #1 complication from childbirth is Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders; which are statistically grouped together under postpartum depression or PPD. The official rate of postpartum depression in the United States in 2017 has risen to 20-25%. This means that with an average of 4 million births per year roughly, 1 million NEW mothers are diagnosed annually; this doesn’t include existing PPD numbers. Much of the prevalence of PPD is due to the fact that most American women begin their recovery after the six-week doctor’s post-delivery exam. However, there exists a six to eight week “Healing Window of Opportunity” that women don’t realize occurs and should be take advantage of as it is minimal effort by new moms but maximum results are seen. This window occurs as a woman’s body transitions back to a non-pregnant state.
What We Don’t Know
What many women don’t realize is that the body begins its healing process within hours after the placenta is birthed because of significant the drop in the levels of hormones. Women in other cultures understand this due to cultural upbringing and begin managing their recovery from Day 5 after delivery. American women begin on about day 42, following their 6-week checkup. American moms have generally not known of any other alternatives.
The first 6–8 weeks sets the foundation for the next 3–4 months of healing.
The Malaysian Example – Global benchmark
Ms. Lynn has conducted original research on holistic post-pregnancy recovery practices that are traditional in other parts of the world. Much of the research is from Malaysia, a country with the lowest rates of PPD in the world at 3%. Valerie spent four years gathering information, as nothing was written down or in English. In Malaysia, the government has incorporated postnatal body therapies and treatments into its Maternal Health Care Policy. Each mother is afforded the opportunity of six-two-hour body treatments and abdominal wrapping within six weeks of delivery. These, in combination with diet, activity, and personal care guidelines, all contribute to a very strong post-pregnancy recovery, much more so than American women experience. As a result of her research and experience, in Malaysia, Ms. Lynn is a zealous advocate for preventive measures which women can take to reduce the chances of suffering from postpartum depression, beyond the “baby blues”, which is a relatively normal and transient condition.

Community Class rules
In order to keep the class price affordable for all, students must pitch in together to keep the teaching space clean and orderly. Each student is responsible to clean up after themselves (food, drinks, teaching items and products used) and keep their area/seat is clean. At the end of each day it will be a community effort to ensure room and teaching products and items are cleaned, packed and put away.
To fully participate and experience the traditional after birth recovery practices taught in class bring an old change of clothes you don’t mind getting herbal product or oil on. Students pair off and will be practicing the Bengkung wrapping standing-up and the massage lying down on the floor on your own matt. Also bring items that will make you comfortable such as slippers, comfy clothes, back pillow, etc.
Fresh Herbal Compress
• A pair of scissors.
• One set of measuring spoons.
• A spoon to stir and work with the mixture.
• Please note that your hands may become temporarily stained yellow when handling fresh herbs. You can bring tight fitting latex gloves.
Fresh ingredients to assemble ONE fresh herbal compresses
To maximize teaching time purchase and prepare the ingredients prior to class and bring in a container with a lid. You will need approximately 1 cup of each ingredient cut-up very small, minced-style; excluding the sea salt and black pepper corns. Ingredients can be mixed together.
- green lime peel, only, no fruit
- lemon grass
- Unpeeled, fresh, mature or old, ginger root or rhizome (old ginger has a thick skin and less moisture than young ginger)
- Unpeeled, fresh turmeric rhizome
Important note: The ginger and turmeric do not have to be peeled but they must be washed and scrubbed very, very well before cutting.
- chopped fresh lime or peppermint leaves
Bring on the day
- 3 tablespoons: Sea Salt
- 3 tablespoons: Black peppercorns
- Large zip lock bag.
Tips: The ginger and the You can purchase items such as the turmeric and lime leaves on line. | You can cut the ginger and turmeric into smaller piece and put them into a food processor to mince quickly.
Bring an extra pair of underwear.
Heat-infused Abdominal Massage
Wear clothing that you won’t mind if it becomes stained from turmeric or oil.
Other supplies needed:
- 2 Hand – towels.
- 2 Bath towels.
- Thick yoga matt or thick matt to use on the floor during massage. You can bring a small, flattish pillow for the head.
- Hand wipes.
- Notebook, pen/pencil, sharpie marker, colored marker.

At the end of this workshop participants will:
1. Discover why Malaysia has the lowest rates of Postpartum Mood & Anxiety Disorders (PMAD) in the world.
2. Distinguish and compare Eastern and Western postnatal recovery philosophies, and practices, by having a clear understanding of exactly what traditional postpartum recovery practices are, and what they are not.
3. Recognize the void of the lack of postnatal knowledge in the United States and fill it with the world’s most holistic and comprehensive practices, based on evidenced-based proof, and adapt it locally.
4. Explain the benefits of an actively, managed after birth recovery compared to an unmanaged, random recovery.
5. Convey confidently to clients the importance and benefits of actively managing the immediate healing from Day 1 during the first six weeks after pregnancy and childbirth, and then beyond with an initial beginning and an end in mind during Phase I of a new Mother’s healing.
6. Summarize post-pregnancy wellness and well-being and the combination is required for a holistic healing to take place.
7. Illustrate the natural process that takes places during the Puerperium period; why it is important and how Asian women successful harness and navigate the body’s transition back to a non-pregnant state.
8. Explain the effectiveness of how a yoni sauna, via steam therapy used for thousands of years, tones, heats, disinfects, heals and assists hormonal re-balancing.
9. Confidently discuss the importance of providing stability to a new Mother’s weakened core, by demonstrating the Malaysian-method of the traditional and modern Bengkung-style of wrapping the core.
10. Explain and demonstrate the importance in preparing a new Mother’s abdomen and core before wrapping so it is more comfortable there by maximizing the effectiveness of a postpartum garment.
11. List the benefits of how supporting a new Mother’s weakened core and self-infused heat encourages a post-baby body to release retained water, fat and air faster and more efficiently.
12. Identify the most effective and popular types of herbs used in Malaysian in a postpartum fresh herbal compress and how to assemble it.
13. Breakdown the specific Malaysian postnatal nutritional and diet guidelines and apply them to postpartum-ize recipes and meals.
14. Develop and personalized structured daily, recovery plans for clients to create an atmosphere that focuses on breastfeeding, healing and recovery and coach them through it.
15. Prepare Dads and primary helpers who will be a new Mother’s support system during the first six-weeks postpartum by specifying how, and what, their role will be according to the Healing and Recuperation Plan that is developed in supporting a new Moms breastfeeding, healing and recovery.
16. List the most popular and effective natural products Malaysian mother’s use after childbirth and why.
17. Identify and offer additional individual and bundled services: fresh herbal compress, abdominal preparation and wrapping, yoni sauna consultation and postnatal meal preparation.
18. Recognize how traditional feminine care can be incorporated into Doula self-care.
19. Create more detailed a personalized Client In-take form.
20. Business module: Clearly identify an ideal client by defining the perfect client avatar.

The class will run from 9:30am – 530pm, approximately. Two 15-minute breaks are intended depending on the progression of the material, however students are welcome to take a break if needed. There will be a lunch break an hour between 12pm – 1pm. It is recommended that you bring a simple cold lunch, such as a sandwich, for ease of eating in case we are running behind schedule.

Within six (6) months after passing the test each Practitioner-in-Training must submit the following report:
1. A report on the servicing of the three (3) clients including services provided, personal observations and client feedback signed by your client.
2. Three (3) 30-day Recovery Care plan including nutrition, meals, personal care, womb care and available mental health resources based on information learn in the training including Postnatal Diet Do’s and Don’ts.

Lynn’s book provides the reader with a plan to help prepare a new mother and her family for optimum spostpartum recovery. Although no exact cause has been found as a link to all perinatal mood disorders, factors such as hormone imbalances, lack of sleep, previous mental health issues, and inadequate social support are known to predispose some women. Lynn’s book is not meant to make the case that The Mommy Plan will either fully protect against or eradicate a postpartum mood disorder. However, by addressing some of the factors that may play a role in postpartum mood disorders, Lynn offers age-old guidance on how to best set a new mother and her family up for peak postpartum healing, with the hope that this will lessen the likelihood of serious physical or emotional issues occurring.
